An Interview with Mark Shainblum about Other Covenants

As part of Hanukkah this year, I was able to interview Mark Shainblum about the Other Covenants collection of Jewish alternative histories. Mark and I talk about the Jewish diaspora, imagining alternative histories, identity for Jewish Canadians, and a new upcoming project Mark is doing with Andrea Lobel as a Hanukkah surprise!!



Mark Shainblum is an award-winning comics and science fiction writer. He co-created the Northguard and Angloman superhero series with Gabriel Morrissette, and has also written Captain Canuck, the comic book adaptations of Michael Moorcock’s Corum novels, and, most recently, Auric: A God in Plastic in collaboration with Dan Day. He has been published by Matrix Comics, First Comics, Broadway Comics, Titan Comics, and Great North Comics, among others.

Mark has written numerous science fiction stories for various magazines and anthologies, and co-edited three anthologies: Arrowdreams: An Anthology of Alternate Canadas, Superhero Universe: Tesseracts Nineteen, and Other Covenants: Alternate Histories of the Jewish People, the latter in collaboration with Andrea Lobel. They will also be co-editing Best Jewish SF in 2024.

Mark is a recipient of the Aurora Award for Canadian science fiction, and in 2016 was inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame. He is also a past-president of SF Canada, Canada’s national association of science fiction professionals.
