An Interview with ‘Nathan Burgoine

Just in time for the holidays, ‘Nathan Burgoine and I sit down to talk about his latest collection Upon the Midnight Queer. We explore holiday story tropes, the importance of Queer people seeing ourselves in holiday media, the power of revisioning traditional stories, and the nuances of writing a yuletide story!!

‘Nathan Burgoine is a tall queer guy who writes mostly shorter fiction, usually somewhere in the Venn Diagram of speculative, romantic, and/or young adult—but always queer. His debut novel, Light, was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award, and his young adult novel Exit Plans for Teenage Freaks was a finalist for a Prix Aurora Award. His most recent releases include Upon the Midnight Queer (queer retellings of holiday and winter stories) and Stuck With You, a queer “hi-lo” rom-com. Beyond writing, ‘Nathan has worked in a sheet metal factory, on queer outreach, and as a bookstore manager. He, his husband, and their rescued husky live in Ottawa, Ontario. You can find him online at ApostropheN.wordpress.com.
